The Dead Horse Theory is a satirical metaphor that describes how some people, institutions, or even nations face obvious problems, but they act as if the problem does not exist or is not understood. Rather than acknowledge the reality, they ignore it and try to justify it.

The essence of this theory is simple:

Ifyou realize that you are riding a dead horse, the best and simplest solution is to get off the horse and leave it alone.

However, in reality, many people, organizations, or nations actually take other unreasonable steps, such as:

1. Buy a new saddle for the dead horse.

2. Feed him in the hope that he will come back to life.

3. Replace the rider with another person.

4. Fire the person in charge of caring for the horses and replace him with a new person.

5. Hold a meeting to discuss strategies to increase horse speed.

6. Forming special teams and committees to examine the dead horse from various aspects. They worked for months, compiled reports, and finally proposed solutions, even though it was clear from the start that the horse was dead.

7. After a long time, the team finally reached the conclusion they had known all along: “This horse is indeed dead.”

8. However, because they have wasted so much energy, time, and resources, they are still reluctant to admit the reality. In order to justify themselves, they start comparing their horse to other dead horses and argue that this horse is not really dead, it just lacks exercise and needs special training.

9. Then, they propose an additional budget to “train” the dead horse.

10. In the end, they changed the definition of the word “dead” in order to convince themselves that the horse was still alive.

The lesson from this theory illustrates how many people prefer to live in denial, wasting time and energy on futile endeavors, rather than accepting reality and immediately seeking the right solution from the start.
