Oh.. our Rabb, you did not create this in vain, Glory be to you, then protect us from the torments of hell.

Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day there are signs for those who are wise, (namely) those who remember Allah while standing or sitting or lying down and they think about the creation of the heavens and the earth ( while saying): “O our Rabb, you did not create this in vain, Glory be to you, so keep us from the torments of hell “. [Ali ‘Imran / 3: 190-191].

Meditate on the Verses of Allah Azza Wa Jalla

By
DR. Shaykh Shâlih bin Fauzân Alu Fauzân

Let us always increase our piety to Allah, while contemplating His creations, chanting His verses. In this way, we can understand His majesty and power.

The signs of the power of Allah Azza wa Jalla, which He created in the heavens and on the earth and between them, are not all created in vain, but have a purpose. Namely for the benefit of His creatures, as a means of worshiping Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala, as well as proving His oneness. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala said, which means:

إن في خلق السماوات والأرض واختلاف الليل والنهار لآيات لأولي الألباب الذين يذكرون الله قياما وقعودا وعلى جنوبهم ويتفكرون في خلق السماوات والأرض ربنا ما خلقت هذا باطلا سبحانك فقنا عذاب النار

What is meant by contemplating Allah’s verses, is seeing them, contemplating their benefits, so as to produce a deep conviction that only Allah Azza wa Jalla alone is the only one who created them. He is the only god who has the right to be worshiped. He is the only god who has the right to be feared, obeyed, and only He whom we make as a guide, as evidence of His majesty and power. He didn’t create them for nothing.

And we did not create the heavens and the earth and what is in between them without wisdom. This is the opinion of the disbelievers; then woe to those who disbelieve, for they will go to hell . [Shâd / 38: 27].

There are two kinds of verses of Allah Azza wa Jalla:
First: Namely the verses of Allah Azza wa Jalla that we can see. Namely the verses of Allah Azza wa Jalla in the form of all of His creations, both in heaven and on earth, with all the creatures that exist in between. There are so many of them, and we don’t know their numbers.

All of this is evidence to show that He is the only Rabb. All of this shows His power and majesty.

Once upon a time a Bedouin Arab was asked: “How can you know your Lord?”

He also replied: “The soles of the feet, show that there are people walking. Dirt, indicating a camel. Doesn’t this universe show that there is a Creator who is Mighty, Most Great? ”

Verily your Rabb is Allah who created the heavens and the earth in six times, then He resides above ‘Throne; He closed the night to the fast following day, and (He also created) the sun, moon and stars (each) obeying His commands. Remember, creating and ruling is only the right of Allah. Glory be to Allah, Rabb of the Worlds. [al-A’râf / 7: 54].

Second: The verses of Allah Azza wa Jalla in the form of writing. Namely the kalam and the revelation of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala which was sent down to the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam; namely the Al-Qur`aan which is before us. What we are instructed to do is tadaburi and reflect on its meaning, carry out all the commands in it, and know all the prohibitions. In the future, he will be God’s reason to punish humans, if humans waste it. Or vice versa, it will be a human reason to get pleasure in return, if humans want to hold fast and practice in their lives. Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said:

الْقُرْآنُ حُجَّةٌ لَكَ أَوْ عَلَيْكَ

And the Al-Qur`an can be hujjah (pleasure for you) or it can be disastrous for you

In fact, this Al-Qur`an gives directions to a more straight (path) and gives good news to believers who do good deeds that for them there is a great reward. And indeed those who do not believe in the hereafter, We provide them with a painful torment . [al-Isrâ` / 17: 9-10].

Allah Azza wa Jalla asks us to contemplate, think about and pay attention to the verses of Allah Azza wa Jalla. By meditating on the verses of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala, it will foster a sense of majesty towards Allah Azza wa Jalla in our hearts, deep love for Him, strengthen faith in Him, strengthen belief in His oneness. On the other hand, if we leave the verses of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala, the heart will become hard, the eyes will become blind, so that it is as if it is no different from livestock that live on earth and then die into soil.

Have we ever seen small, complicated tools made by humans today, such as cellphones, laptops, and others? How much do humans admire these tools? How much do humans appreciate the discovery? In fact, that is only a small part of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala’s creations, because the discovery was not purely the work of humans, but still belongs to the creation of Allah Azza wa Jalla. Namely Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala inspired and gave knowledge to humans, so that he was able to create these tools.

If that is the case, how can a man be amazed by his work, then he forgets the signs of Allah Azza wa Jalla’s power that are held in this universe, even signs of His greatness in man himself?

And on that earth there are signs (the power of Allah) for those who believe, and (also) in yourself; then are you not paying attention? [adz-Dzâriyât / 51: 20-21].

So do they not pay attention to the camel how it was created; And heavens, how it is raised? And the mountains, how are they established? And the earth, how is it spread out? [al-Ghasyiyah / 88: 17-20].

The earth , where we live, we walk on it, which carries and lifts us up; the sky that shelters us, the livestock we ride on, we drink its milk, we eat its meat, and other benefits, why don’t we want to pay attention and meditate on it? Why don’t we want to use our minds to understand that all creatures were not created in vain, were not just created and then abandoned? They were created for a very noble purpose.

Our obligation is to observe and contemplate Allah’s creatures, pay attention to the signs of His power. It is the duty of every Muslim to make what is seen around him, even what is in him has value before his eyes, namely to show how great the majesty and power of his creation are, to show how beautiful his creation is, how much wisdom is from his creation. Allah Azza wa Jalla arranges all of that. Allah is the Greatest! Allah is the Greatest.

Let us remain in a state of submission to Allah Azza wa Jalla. Because in fact, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala denounces those who turn away from His verses, do not want to contemplate and teach them.

Allah Azza wa Jalla said:

وكأين من آية في السماوات والأرض يمرون عليها وهم عنها معرضون وما يؤمن أكثرهم بالله إلا وهم مشركون أفأمنوا أن تأتيهم غاشية من عذاب الله أو تأتيهم الساعة بغتة وهم لا يشعرون

And there are so many signs (power of Allah) in the sky and on the earth that they go through, while they are turning away from it. And most of them do not believe in Allah, but are in a state of associating partners with Allah (with other worship). Do they feel safe from the arrival of the torment of Allah which covers them, or the arrival of Judgment upon them suddenly, when they are not aware of it? [Yûsuf / 12: 105-107]

They are like livestock. Mentioned in the word of God

Or do you think that most of them hear or understand? They are nothing but like cattle, they are even more astray (from the cattle) . [Al-Furqan / 25: 44]
