hiding from Facebook Graph Search

Facebook graph search
Okay, so it’s not exactly a secret that Canadians like a good brew every now and then, but that doesn’t mean they necessarily want everyone on Facebook knowing about it. Now that Graph Search has rolled out to the world, it’s much harder to hide that sort of thing.

All those bands and TV shows you’ve liked? The games you’ve played and pictures you’ve been tagged in? They put you on the Graph Search radar. How do you remove yourself from it? By tweaking every privacy setting you can click on, because Graph follows the permissions you’ve set up. You’ll want to click on the lock icon in the main toolbar and then click see more settings.

It’s all about limiting your audience. Things you’re okay letting the world know about can be set to public, but they’ll also land you in the results for Graph queries. Limiting certain things to friends-only or yourself-only will dramatically lower the odds that you’ll appear when someone does a search.

Start with your future and past posts. Edit the future posts setting so that the public can’t see them, and then click the “Limit Old Posts” button. You may want to read Facebook’s notes about limiting, because it’s not a simple process to undo.

Tweaking photos is imperative too. Have a look at your albums and decide what you really want people looking at. If you’ve turned on automatic uploads in the Facebook app on your smartphone, you may have some albums that you don’t need to share with anyone. Set them to “only me” if you do. Other albums, well, that’s your call. Sharing with friends should be safe enough, as long as you’re somewhat selective when it comes to approving friend requests.

Once you’re done with your own photos, it’s a good idea to check out other people’s photos that you’re tagged in. Facebook’s official YouTube channel has a good video that will walk you through the process.

Don’t want your friends knowing who else is on your friends list? Flip that switch, too. It’s not located in the privacy center — you’ll need to go to your profile page and then click “friends,” then click the edit icon (pencil). You can do the same with family relationships and your “likes.” Once you’ve finished with all those content settings, check out how your profile appears to the public. Click the lock icon again, but this time click “who can see my stuff.” Clicking “view as” will show you what the public sees when they view your profile page.

If it’s spilling too many juicy bits, head back to your privacy settings and keep adjusting them until you’re satisfied with the result. Once you’re all done, you’ll be much less likely to pop up on Graph Search. The only surefire way to dodge it completely is to avoid joining Facebook in the first place. There’s a good change that shutting down your account would work, too, but who knows whatactually happens with all that info after you pull the plug?
