Alhamdulillah, efforts do not betray the results. Is that right?

“I get this treasure because of my efforts, thanks to my hard work so far.”

“Alhamdulillah, efforts do not betray the results”

We often hear these words, maybe we even say them as a form of satisfaction, or a form of our gratitude.

But do you know, that attributing the blessings of Allah as a favor for our own efforts, can lead us to shirk in monotheism rububiyah?

Or attribute the favor to God but think that we are the people who are entitled to the favor because of our knowledge and efforts, precisely lead us to arrogance and pride?

sifat sombong, ujub, bangga pada kemampuan diriarrogant, ujub, proud of one's abilities

Word of God:

” And if we bestow upon him some mercy from us, after some adversity has touched him, he will surely say,” This is my right . ” (QS. Fushshilat: 50).

In interpreting this verse Mujahid said: ” This is because of my toil, and I am the one who has the right to own it.”

Meanwhile, Ibn Abbas said: “This is from myself”.

Word of God:

“(Qarun) said: indeed I was given this wealth, none other than because of the knowledge I have .” (QS. Al Qashash: 78)

Qotadah -in interpreting this verse- says: “Meaning: because of my knowledge of how to try.”

Another commentator said: ” Because Allah knows that I am a person who deserves this wealth “, and this is the meaning meant by Mujahid: “I was given this wealth because of my glory.”

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that he heard the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam say:

Three of the children of Israel: the most leprous, the knocking, and the blind, so God wanted to celibate them, so he sent them to them, so he sent them to them. He said: good color, good skin, and people who go me Qdhirna him, he said: Fmsha, went with him Filthy, unto Luna Well Well and fortitude, he said: Which money do I love thee? He said: The camel or the cow – Ishaq doubt – and he was given a pair of camels, so he said: God bless you with it. He said: Good hair, and the one with which people disgusted me goes from me. He said: A cow or camel, then he was given a pregnant cow.

“Surely there are three of the children of Israel, namely: the lepers, the bald, and the blind. Then Allah wanted to test the three of them, so an angel was sent to them.

So the angel came to the first person who suffered from leprosy and asked him: “What is something you most want?”, He replied: “Good looks, beautiful skin, and disgusting disease many people lost from me”. So the person was rubbed, and the disease disappeared, and he was given a good look, beautiful skin, then the angel asked him again: “Then what wealth do you like best?”, He replied: “camel or cow”, then given He was a pregnant camel, and he also prayed: “May God bless you with this camel.”

Then the Angel came to the man with a bald head, and asked him: “What do you want most?”, He replied: “Beautiful hair, and what is disgusting in my head is lost”, then rubbed his head, and immediately his disease disappeared, and he was given beautiful hair, then the angel asked him again: “What property do you like?”. he replied: “cow or camel”, then he was given a cow that is pregnant, while praying: “May God bless you with this cow.”

Then the angel came to the blind man, and asked him: “What do you want most?”, He replied: “May God be pleased to restore my sight so that I can see people”, then wiped his face, and immediately God restored his sight, then the angel asked him again: “What property do you like best?”, he replied: “goat”, then he was given a goat that is pregnant.

Then the camels, cows and goats breed, so that the first one has one camel valley, the second one has one cow valley, and the third one has one goat valley.

The words of the next prophet:

Then the angel came to the person who had previously suffered from leprosy, resembling himself when he was still in the state of leprosy, and said to him: can continue my journey today except with the help of God, then with your help. By God who has given you this handsome look, beautiful skin, and a lot of wealth, I ask you only one camel to supply my journey “, but this request was rejected and answered:” My rights (responsibilities) are still many ” , then the angel said to him: “It seems I once knew you, were you not the first person to suffer from leprosy, which people are very disgusted to see you, moreover you are a poor person, then God gives you wealth? He even replied: “This wealth is inherited from my noble and honorable ancestors”, then the angel said to him: “if you tell a lie, God will return you to your condition again”.

Then the angel came to the man who had previously been bald, resembling himself while still bald, and said to him as he said to the man who had suffered from leprosy, and he also rejected his request as he was rejected by the first man. So the angel said: “If you tell a lie, God will bring you back to your original condition.”

Then the angel came to the man who had previously been blind, resembling his former condition when he was still blind, and said to him: , so that I can no longer continue my journey today, except with the help of God then your help. For the sake of Allah who has restored your sight, I ask for only one goat to supply me to continue my journey “. So the man replied: “Indeed I used to be blind, then God restored my sight. So take what you like, and leave what you do not like. For God’s sake, I will not make it difficult for you to return something that you have taken for God’s sake “. Then the angel said: (HR. Reasonable chapter with Kitabut Tauhid

Shaykh Muhammad bin Shalih Al-Uthaymeen rahimahullah said: One when attributing pleasure to deeds and efforts, then this is a form of shirk in monotheism rububiyah. And if he attracts the favor to God but he thinks that he is the person who deserves to receive the favor, what God gives him is not pure goodness of God but because he is an expert, then this is a form of arrogance and arrogance in monotheism of worship. (Al-Qaulul Mufid: 2/280)

Making people ungrateful is Satan’s main mission

We can read this in the Qur’an, Allah says to narrate the words of Satan when he was cursed and expelled from heaven:

He said fbma ghvytny laqdn lhm sratk mustaqim, then latynhm de Bin Ahamed ydyhm khlfhm precisely precisely ymanhm Villa shmaylhm update ksrhm shakryn

Satan replied: “Since You have punished me astray, I will really (prevent) them from Your straight path, then I will come to them from their faces and from behind them, from their right and from their left. And You will not find most of them grateful. ”  (QS. Al-A’raf: 16-17)

Women are the ones most affected by this Devil’s plot. Therefore, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam said that most of the inhabitants of hell are women, because many of them are not good at gratitude. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam said:

Alter salad paradise Come prepare paradise ftnavlt katba nqvda Willow khzth lakltm curt Ma bqyt world vrayt nār film R kalyvm scene regardless vrayt often hlha Nisa indeed Lim or the Prophet said, bkfrhn mans ykfrn ballh said, ykfrn alshyr vykfrn Ihsan Take hsnt smart hdahn aldhr his night Mink

Indeed, I see heaven -or- heaven has been shown to me, then I also want to take a branch from it, if you can take it you will surely eat it while the world is still there. Then I saw hell, then I never saw the scene as it is today. I see most of the occupants are women. ” They asked again, “Why, O Messenger of Allah.” He replied: “Because of their disbelief.” The companions asked again, “Is it because of their disbelief in God?” she replied: “They disbelieve in her husband’s treatment and kindness. If you do good to one of them for a full year, then he sees something bad from you, he will also say, ‘I do not see any good in you .’ “(HR. Bukhari: 5197)

From Jabir bin Abdullah he said; I have followed the Eid prayers with Rasulullah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam. He started it with prayer before delivering the sermon, without the adzan and Iqamah. After that he stood leaning on Bilal’s hand. Then he commanded to always fear Allah, and gave encouragement to always obey him. He also gives advice to people and reminds them. After that, he passed until he reached the place of women. He also gave them advice and warnings. He said:

Tsdqn von ksrkn htb hell fqamt emarat de Nisa sfa’ sth alkhdyn fqalt Lim or the Prophet said, lankn tksrn alshkah vtkfrn alshyr said, fjln ytsdqn de hlyhn ylqyn no svb Bilal de qrtthn vkhvatmhn

” Give alms, because most of you will be the fuel of hell.” So stood the best woman among them with a pale face while asking, “Why, O Messenger of Allah?” she replied: “Because you are more complaining (complaining) and denying the advantages and benefits of the husband.”  Finally, they donated the jewelry they had by throwing it into the cloth that Bilal had spread, including their rings and necklaces. (HR. Muslim: 885)

Not thankful to her husband and easily forgetting her kindness. While a person who is ungrateful to human beings is a person who is not good at thanking God. As the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam said:

لَا يَشْكُرُ اللَّهَ مَنْ لَا يَشْكُرُ النَّاسَ

” People who are ungrateful to human beings are not considered grateful to God.”  (Narrated by Abu Dawud: 4811)

Lessons from the story of three people tested

– Space and wealth are tests

In the life of this world we are not spared trials. Narrow and airy conditions, poor and rich, are all tests. God said:

” Every living thing will definitely feel dead. We will test you with the pros and cons as a test. And only to Us will you be returned. (QS. Al-Anbiya ‘: 35)

Imam Ibn Kathir explained in his commentary from Ibn Abbas, he said: “Allah tests us with ugliness and goodness, happy and sad, healthy and sick, rich and poor, halal and haram, obedience and immorality, guidance and error.”

One thing we must emphasize is that spaciousness and wealth are also tests. Because many people think that the test is only poor, sick, narrow, and so on. That’s why Allah denied this kind of belief. Allah says:

Fama superhuman hehehe Ma abtlah Abd fakrmh vnmh fyqvl Rabbi lethargic, Vama hehehe Ma abtlah fqdr peace rzqh fyqvl Rabbi hann, Kula

As for man when his Lord  tests him and then he glorifies him and gives him pleasure, then he will say: “My Lord has glorified me”. As for when his Lord tested him and limited his sustenance then he said: “My Lord humiliated me”. Absolutely not . (QS. Al-Fajr: 15-17)

And only those who can understand this knowledge, such as the Prophet Solomon alaihissalam who was narrated by God in His word:

قَالَ هَٰذَا مِن فَضْلِ رَبِّي لِيَبْلُوَنِي أَأَشْكُرُ أَمْ أَكْفُرُ

He (Sulaiman) said, This includes the gift of my Lord to test me whether I am grateful or deny (of His blessings) . (Surah Al-Naml: 40)

– The test of space and wealth is heavier

Of the three people only one survived this test of space and wealth. So if we have ever heard the saying that the test of wealth is heavier than the test of poverty, then it is true. Let us also look at the following hadith, from Usamah radhiyallahu anhu, from the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wasallam, he said:

قُمْتُ عَلَى بَابِ الْجَنَّةِ فَكَانَ عَامَّةَ مَنْ دَخَلَهَا الْمَسَاكِينُ

” I was standing at the door of heaven, so I also saw that most who enter it are poor people.”  (Narrated by Bukhari: 5196, Muslim: 2736)

This hadith shows the virtue of the poor that those who are most safe from the slander of worldly life are them. On the other hand, very few rich people can survive their exams. This also means that the test of wealth and space is heavier than the test of poverty and scarcity. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam should have said:

Fvallh Ma Faqr khshy Wilkinson khshy I’m sure the world earn their tbst bstt Ali de qblkm ftnafsvha to earn tnafsvha vtlhykm earn lhthm

By Allah, it is not poverty that I fear you, but I am afraid that the world is stretched out for you as it was stretched out to those before you, then you are competing for it as they race, then that world destroys you just as they perish . (Narrated by Bukhari: 6425, Muslim: 2961)

Why do many rich people go to hell? The reason is arrogance, that is rejecting the truth and belittling others, not because of his property. People who are rich, have status, and have power are those who are very vulnerable to contracting this disease because the trigger is in them. From this also we can understand that why most of the inhabitants of heaven are poor and weak people? Because they are the ones who are more survivors of the snobbish nature because the trigger is absent or maybe small. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam said:

La Manna from paradise ydkhl qlbh shekels per ca de grave rujul said, it alrjl Dedh their Jeconiah svbh hsna vnlh hsnh He said that God Dedh beauty Jamil ul-Kubra btr public vghmt

” No one will enter the paradise of the person in whose heart there is a weight of mustard seeds from pride.” One man asked, “Do men really like good clothes and sandals (does this include arrogance)?” He replied: “Indeed, Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. That arrogance is rejecting the truth and belittling human beings. ”  (HR. Muslim: 91)

How to be grateful for favors

Grateful for favors in three ways. Shaykh Muhammad bin Shalih Al-Uthaymeen rahimahullah said: “Grateful for favors has three pillars, namely: First, acknowledge with the heart. Second, praise God orally. Third, practice with the limbs with something that pleases Him. ” (Al-Qaulul Mufid: 2/283)

Therefore, denying Allah’s favor can happen in three ways:

  1. Heart, that is, when a person has forgotten Allah as a gift of favors, for example, he believes that the blessings he gets come only from his hard work, sustenance comes from his workplace and superiors, etc.
  2. Verbally, like what Qarun once said, Allah says:

He said Ali knowledge nma vtyth vomiting Ulm ylm Allah tall hlk de faeces de alqrvn his desperate efforts curt vaksr collectors Villa ysal al znvbhm almjrmvn

Karun said: “Indeed I was only given that treasure, because of the knowledge I have”. And does he not know that Allah has destroyed the previous generations who were stronger than he, and amassed more wealth? And there is no need to ask the sinners about their sins. (Surat al-Qashaah: 78)

3. Act, that is, by using the favors to commit immorality to God. As He says:

Have you not seen those who have exchanged the favors of Allah with disbelief and brought their people down to the valley of destruction?  (QS. Ibrahim: 28-30)

Tips for being grateful for Allah’s blessings

– seek knowledge

Only those who have religious knowledge can see the reality of the world and are not lulled by its deceptive pleasures. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam should have said:

مَنْ سَلَكَ طَرِْيقًا ْلْتَمِسُ فِيْهِ عِلْمًا سَهَّلَ اللهُ لَهُ طَرِيْقًا الِإلَجْنَّةِ

” Whoever takes a path to study, Allah will make it easier for him to go to heaven. (HR. Muslim)

Compare the words of the Prophet Solomon as He said:

قَالَ هَٰذَا مِن فَضْلِ رَبِّي لِيَبْلُوَنِي أَأَشْكُرُ أَمْ أَكْفُرُ

He (Sulaiman) said This is a gift from my Lord to test me whether I am grateful or deny (His favor) . (QS. Al-Naml: 40)

With the words of Qarun, as Allah says:

قَالَ انَّمَا أُوتأُيتُهُ عَلَى عٰلْمٍ عِندِي

“(Qarun) said: indeed I was given this wealth, none other than because of the knowledge I have .” (QS. Al Qashash: 78)

– remembering death and the hereafter

The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam said:

أَكْثِرُوا ذِكْرَ هَاذِمِ اللَّذَّاتِ يَعْنِي الْمَوْتَ

“Many-many remember the breaker of pleasure, namely death” (Narrated by Tirmidhi: 2307)

Because by remembering death we will also remember that all the favors we feel will be questioned and accounted for. Allah says:

Then you will surely be asked on that day about all those pleasures . (QS. At-Takatsur: 8)

Dari Ibnu Mas’ud radhiyallahu anhu, Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam bersabda:

Son La tzvl thing I accused de Fear Abd Al Khums Al Umrah until ysal Fame Fame fnah precisely shbabh vmalh blah de Chino aktsbh vfym nfqh vmaza process knowledge FEMA

“The feet of the son of Adam will not shift on the Day of Judgment from the side of his Lord until asked about five things; about his age for what he spends, about his youth for what he uses, about his wealth from where he got it and where he infakan and about what he has practiced with his knowledge . ” (HR. Tirmidhi: 2416)

– looking down on world affairs

From Abu Hurairah Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa Salam said:

إِذَا نَظَرَ أَحَدُكُمْ َلَى مَنْ فُضِّلَ عَلَيْهِ فِي الْمَالِ وَالْخَلْقِ فَلْيَنْظُرْ َلَى مَنْ هُوَمُلْ مُلْه

” When one of you sees a person given an advantage over his property and body shape, he should look at a person who is inferior to him where he is given an advantage over him .” (HR. Bukhari: 6490, Muslim: 2963)

In another editorial, from Abu Hurairah said: Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa Salam said:

انْظرواوا َلَى مْنْ ْسَفَلِ مْنْكُمْ وَلَا تْنْظُرُوا َلَ مُنْ هُوَ فَوْقَكُمْ فَهُوَجأَدَرُ أَنَ لُمَةََََََِ

” Look at the people below you, do not look at those above you, it is better to make you do not disbelieve in the blessings of God.”  (HR. Muslim: 2963)

Why do we have to look down? Because lust has no limit, the world has no end, as the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam said:

لَوأَنَّ لِابْنِ اَدَمَ وَادِيًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ أَحَبَّ ْنْ يَكُوْنَ لَهُ وَادِيَانِ وَلَنْ يَمْلَأَ فَاهُ إِلَّا الَُّرَلُلَهَ

” If a son of Adam had a golden offering, he would undoubtedly want the second valley. Nothing can fill his mouth except the ground and Allah accepts the repentance of those who want to repent. ”  (Narrated by Bukhari: 6436, Muslim: 1034)

– make friends with poor people

Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam was a person who interacted more with the poor, until he said:

ابْغُونِي الضُّعَفَاءَ فَإِنَّمَا تُرْزَقُونَ وَتُنْصَرُونَ بِضُعَفَائِكُمْ

” Find weak people for me, actually you are given rizki and given victory because of your weak people.”  (Narrated by Abu Dawud: 2594)
